PRAY TO STAY DEAD, new zombie novel from Creeping Hemlock Press
We're pleased to announce that the first novel from Print Is Dead, our new zombie line, is now available through Kindle. The trade paperback will be available for order wherever books are sold within two weeks.

ABOUT THE BOOK

1974.

The Summer of Love is a fading memory, the Cold War rages on, Richard M. Nixon is barely holding onto the Presidency, and the dead are returning to life.

Five friends on their way to a week at Lake Tahoe, a Vietnam veteran in Sacramento trying to get home to his daughter in New Mexico, an older couple idling in a dusty shop in the hills, and a dangerous man who has spent twenty years preparing his strange family for the end of the world...

As civilization collapses, these scattered survivors cross paths, and the hungry dead are the least of the horrors unleashed.

Those who die will walk. Those who live will hope for a quick death, and they will...

PRAY TO STAY DEAD.

PRAISE

"A brutally entertaining collision of zombie thriller and grindhouse action. Not for the faint of heart!"

Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Patient Zero

"This guy Mason James Cole knocked me back on my heels. I've read a lot of zombie books over the last few years, and frankly, I thought I had seen it all. It seemed like nothing could shock me anymore. But Pray to Stay Dead delivered on all fronts. It's got all the raw emotional violence and brutal gore one would expect from a zombie book, but those things are only the surface of this tale. Underneath, Pray to Stay Dead possesses an elegantly simple style of storytelling that I haven't found since my first encounter with Jack Ketchum. Mason James Cole is that good. Read Pray to Stay Dead, and then pray this guy writes more soon, because he's the real deal."

- Joe McKinney, author of Dead City and Apocalypse of the Dead

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mason James Cole is the pseudonym of an apparently mild-mannered conservative type who doesn’t want his family and friends to know he writes stuff like this. His boring but lucrative job keeps him on the road five months out of the year, and that’s when he watches scary movies, reads scary books, and writes scary stories. He smiles and nods through church every Sunday and secretly votes Green. He lives in Farmington, Utah.

"These guys know more about the undead than I do... and that's saying something, because I've been hanging out with zombies for as long as I can remember."

-- George A. Romero

THE FEVER KILL: Imperfect copies half off

$8.49 Trade-Sized Paperbacks

Tom Piccirilli's The Fever Kill, the ultimate in gritty, pugnacious literary fugues, is known for driving casual bookstore browsers and employees into a state of implacable rage, resulting in many copies being utterly destroyed but leaving many more just somewhat damaged. For fine reading at a frugal price, consider picking up a minimally damaged copy of The Fever Kill for only $8.49 (including domestic shipping).

FRAYED and SHALLOW END now available at Amazon.com

In addition to The Fever Kill and the Stoker-finalist anthology Corpse Blossoms, you can now find two other Creeping Hemlock classics at your favorite online mega-bookstore. Frayed by Tom Piccirilli (FearZone.com's Best Novella of 2007) and The Shallow End of the Pool by Adam-Troy Castro (current Stoker finalist) are both in stock at Amazon.com. Current prices on those two titles match ours, but as sales and quantity go up we imagine they'll reduce. If you already own any of these, help us out by hopping over and contributing your thoughts as a customer review.

New review of THE FEVER KILL

From W.D. Gagliani's review in Cemetery Dance #60: "Having just read Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men, I can honestly say that The Fever Kill puts me in the mind of that kind of book, and Piccirilli's writing is as fine, and maybe finer, than McCarthy's. The Fever Kill is just as deeply layered with moral ambiguities, just as peopled with characters trapped in orbits out of which they can't or won't break free. Riding along with Crease in his Mustang, revisiting old haunts, old grudges, old flames--none of which is the same, yet all of which is the same--evokes that same sense of desperation and inevitability all great noir writing aspires to. Piccirilli's horror credentials remain as an underlying current threaded between the traditional noir themes handled masterfully by a writer at the top of his game. Sardonic and sparse, there is simply no fat on these bones.... Perhaps the Coen Brothers should come calling."

Only a small handful of signed copies remain here at creepinghemlock.com. We're also offering imperfect copies for just $8.49.

Update
Children of the New Disorder is at the printer. We haven't gotten an official delivery date from them, but it's most likely going to be sometime early next month. We've put everything we've got into this book, and it is going to be beautiful-- by far our finest release to date.

Like zombie stories? Then you'll like our new chapbooks, Thin Them Out and Flesh is Fleeting... Art is Forever (or Some Bullshit Will Continue Even After the Dead Wipe Us Out). Thin Them Out is a collaboration between Dr. Kim Paffenroth and, um, two other folks. Flesh is Fleeting is written by the always awesome Gary A. Braunbeck. At $5 and $6 a pop (with free domestic shipping), they're the perfect stocking-stuffers for the zombie lovers in your life!

Our attempt to raise $500 for the unnamed author was a failure, but our efforts elsewhere bore fruit and a certain King-sized charity for freelance artists came through today in a very big way. Special thanks to the always grumpy Harlan Ellison for his assistance, and kudos to Michael Shea, who has donated a copy of his collection, The Autopsy and Other Tales, which we'll be auctioning off soon.

We're pleased to announce that Adam-Troy Castro's fantastic novella, The Shallow End of the Pool, has been nominated for a Black Quill Award. The entire ballot can be found here, and you can register to vote here -- it's quick and painless!

Update, plus plea for help

Children of the New Disorder
will go to press sometime next week. We're finalizing the dustjacket and the printed end-papers, and then it's time to fire up the press!

Stay tuned.

Moving on...

Out of respect for his privacy, I'm not going to get into too many personal details. A writer friend of ours--he's a freelancer whose work has appeared in THE NEW YORKER, PLAYBOY, VANITY FAIR, THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION and several other prestigious venues, including several horror magazines in the 80s--is in bad shape and in dire need of a $3000 surgery. It's life or death, he's broke, and his insurance isn't covering the operation.

We're doing what we can financially, which isn't much, so I thought I'd post a plea here, among other places.

A few months back, you may recall that we printed 75 freebie sneak preview copies of JACK'S MAGIC BEANS, the Brian Keene book that was, unfortunately, canceled. So far, we've given out 50 or so copies for free with CORPSE BLOSSOMS orders/auction. We have about 25 copies left from the 75 run (as well as about 25 PC copies), and I'd like to make five available right now at $100 a pop. (I will, of course, accept higher offers.) It's a rare book, and I've already seen copies go for close to that at eBay and HorrorMall. I want to get the money to him ASAP, so I'm skipping the lengthy auction process.

Please note: I am not keeping ANY of the money. He's getting it all. Between this and the efforts of other friends in the industry, he should be able to raise the 3 grand. I realize that this may sound suspicious to some--I can only offer my word that it is not.

If interested in helping, drop me an email at admin@creepinghemlock.com. I'll give you more info, and, if you like, have him contact you directly, letting you know this is on the up and up, and that he simply doesn't want every detail of his situation made public.

If you know any book collectors who might be interested, please pass this info on to them.

Thanks.
